When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Overview

Most team failures are quiet: effort leaks away, people wait for someone senior, and procedures protect people from the work itself. This module draws on Wilfred Bion's basic assumption groups, research on social loafing, free riding and diffusion of responsibility, and Isabel Menzies Lyth's study of social defences in nursing. Liverpool City Council's recovery shows how structures sustain, and repair, hidden dynamics. Leadership is whatever the team needs done. This module covers the functional team leadership model of Morgeson, DeRue and Karam, Pearce and Conger on shared leadership, Hackman's authority matrix and Robert Kelley's follower styles. The All Blacks illustrate a deliberately designed culture, and the module sets out the leader's job across a team's life: designer first, coach at the right moments, member throughout.

What you'll develop

In this Bitesize, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Identify Bion's basic assumptions of dependency, fight-flight and pairing when they appear in a group.
  2. Explain how social loafing, the sucker effect, diffusion of responsibility and social defences quietly reduce team performance.
  3. Apply five routes to repair, naming the pattern rather than the person.
  4. Use the functional team leadership model to identify which leadership functions your team is missing.
  5. Place your team on Hackman's authority matrix and explain when shared leadership works best.
