When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Who It's For

Senior leaders, team coaches and OD practitioners in public bodies and voluntary organisations

Overview

When a capable team underperforms, the cause often lies beneath the task, in anxiety or in a problem nobody agrees on. Taken from the Immerse Raising the team's game, this Focus opens with the Tavistock tradition: Wilfred Bion's basic assumptions, primary task, boundary and role, and Isabel Menzies Lyth's study of social defences. It compares individual, team and systemic coaching, drawing on Peter Hawkins and on Hackman and Wageman, then turns to managing teams through Tuckman's regression after change and Lencioni's five dysfunctions. It ends with groupthink and countermeasures such as leaders speaking last, and four problem structuring methods, including Checkland's rich pictures.

Aims

The aim is to help leaders look beneath before they act: reading the anxiety and assumptions shaping a team's performance, coaching the system as well as the person, and framing a messy problem properly before anyone rushes to solve it.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Explain how anxiety and social defences shape performance, using Bion's basic assumptions and Menzies Lyth's study.
  2. Compare individual, team and systemic coaching and choose the approach that best fits what a team needs.
  3. Use countermeasures to groupthink and a method such as rich pictures to frame a messy problem before solving it.

What you'll develop

Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:

  1. Describe Bion's three basic assumptions and recognise them in groups and in the coaching relationship.
  2. Distinguish individual, team, group and systemic coaching and choose where the most useful leverage lies.
  3. Distinguish a group from a team using Katzenbach and Smith's conditions, and judge whether the work in front of you actually needs a team.
  4. Describe groupthink and identify its four symptoms while a decision is still open.
  5. Identify the signs that a situation needs problem structuring before any option is chosen.
  6. Use the concepts of primary task, boundary, role and the organisation in the mind to explore a coachee's situation.
  7. Apply Hawkins's five disciplines and Hackman and Wageman's conditions and timing to a team you lead or support.
  8. Identify where a team sits in Tuckman's stages and where it is failing in Lencioni's five dysfunctions, so that you start the fix at the right level.
