Who It's For

Team leaders and teams ready to raise their game

Overview

Raising performance and protecting people are not competing goals, and this programme treats them as one task. Raising the team's game starts with the cost of toxic behaviour, drawing on Robert Sutton, and with performance management as a system rather than an annual ritual. It moves through McChrystal's Team of Teams, Lencioni's dysfunctions, trust and psychological safety, collective intelligence, groupthink, structured dissent and productive conflict. Problem structuring methods help teams think through messy choices, and the day closes with team coaching from Hawkins and Clutterbuck, the Tavistock tradition and structured debriefs that help a team keep getting better without burning out.

Aims

This programme aims to help team leaders raise performance without burning people out, by strengthening the systems, trust and challenge that high performing teams depend on. It develops the judgement to address toxic behaviour early, to invite dissent and productive conflict, and to coach the team as a whole towards sustained improvement.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Diagnose what is holding a team's performance back, from toxic behaviour and weak performance systems to groupthink and avoided conflict.
  2. Apply practices of trust, psychological safety, structured dissent and debriefing to raise the quality of your team's thinking and delivery.
  3. Lead and coach a team towards sustained high performance in ways that protect wellbeing and strengthen coordination with other teams.

What you'll develop

By the end of this Immerse, you will be able to:

  1. Apply Sutton's aftermath, target and pattern tests to distinguish toxic behaviour from honest challenge or an occasional bad day.
  2. Explain why an efficient hierarchy struggles when speed and complexity rise, and distinguish efficiency from adaptability.
  3. Explain the hidden profile problem and why groups tend to lose information that only one member holds.
  4. Distinguish task, relationship and process conflict and explain what the meta-analyses say about each.
  5. Distinguish group coaching from team coaching and explain why design comes before coaching.
  6. Describe Bion's three basic assumptions and recognise them in groups and in the coaching relationship.
  7. Distinguish a group from a team using Katzenbach and Smith's conditions, and judge whether the work in front of you actually needs a team.
  8. Identify the signs that a situation needs problem structuring before any option is chosen.
