About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Who It's For

Managers, HR professionals and service leaders in councils, the NHS, housing, police, fire and charities in Wales and England.

Overview

This Focus brings together the protected characteristics and the disadvantage that single labels miss. It opens with intersectionality from Crenshaw, privilege and the evidence on social class from The Class Ceiling. It then turns to race equality at work through the Macpherson definition, NHS WRES data, the Anti-racist Wales Action Plan and Baroness Casey's review, and to equal pay and harassment through the Birmingham, Next and Asda cases. It closes with religion or belief and the Grainger test, the Seldon and Eweida cases, and disability, from the social model and Tom Shakespeare's critique to section 15 and reasonable adjustments.

Aims

This Focus aims to develop leaders who give every characteristic proper attention, read equality data beneath the headline and judge apparently competing rights through proportionality. It builds the practical habits of asking rather than assuming, holding good adjustment conversations and treating disadvantage as something systems produce.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Examine equality data by intersecting characteristics so that hidden disadvantage comes into view.
  2. Apply proportionality when rights appear to compete, rather than ranking characteristics.
  3. Hold adjustment conversations that remove barriers quickly and are reviewed over time.

What you'll develop

Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:

  1. Explain intersectionality using Crenshaw's analysis, and break down data so that disadvantage where characteristics cross is not hidden.
  2. Explain institutional racism using the Macpherson definition, focusing on what systems produce rather than what individuals intend.
  3. Assess your organisation's pay and harassment risks, including allowances, exceptions, menopause support and the duties in force since 30 October 2026.
  4. Judge apparently competing rights through proportionality, using the Eweida case, rather than by ranking characteristics.
  5. Apply the social model question of what gets in the way, allowing for fluctuating impairment and using language that follows the person in front of you.
  6. Plan and hold an adjustment conversation that removes barriers quickly, records what is agreed in an adjustment passport and is reviewed over time.
