About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Who It's For

Leaders, managers and service designers in councils, the NHS, housing, police, fire and charities across Wales and England.

Overview

This Focus brings together the practices that turn inclusion from intention into everyday experience. It starts with hidden disabilities and long-term conditions, spoon theory and the Griffiths case, then neurodiversity through the Job Demands-Resources model and Nancy Doyle's spiky profile. It moves to accessible design, from the curb-cut effect and universal design to WCAG, and to inclusive leadership, the 5Ds of bystander intervention and Dobbin and Kalev's evidence on what works. It closes with a capstone on the Windrush Lessons Learned Review, the London Fire Brigade culture review and Yorkshire County Cricket Club.

Aims

This Focus aims to develop leaders who design services and workplaces so that fewer people meet a barrier, make disclosure feel safe and build cultures where speaking up is normal. It strengthens the judgement to measure honestly, respond to backlash with evidence and turn accepted recommendations into lasting change.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Design services, documents and recruitment so that accessibility is built in rather than requested.
  2. Respond to everyday slights with confidence, using bystander intervention and repair.
  3. Build measurement and accountability that keep inclusive practice going beyond any individual leader.

What you'll develop

Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:

  1. Create conditions in which disclosure feels safe, handling health information confidentially and lowering the cost of asking for an adjustment.
  2. Apply the Job Demands-Resources model to reduce demands and add resources for neurodivergent colleagues in daily work and management.
  3. Apply the curb-cut effect, the seven principles of universal design and the persona spectrum to a service, building or document you manage.
  4. Use the 5Ds of bystander intervention and the impact and repair approach to respond to everyday slights, recognising when formal procedures are needed.
  5. Distinguish the control tactics that Dobbin and Kalev found tend to fail from the engagement, contact and accountability approaches that work.
  6. Judge what turns accepted recommendations into lasting change, including named owners, honest data, independent oversight and fair process for those accused.
