Who It's For

Managers stepping up into bigger roles

Overview

The habits that earned a promotion are often the ones that hold a manager back. This programme starts with Marshall Goldsmith's What Got You Here Won't Get You There and the four disciplines of excellent managers, then builds self-awareness as a continuing practice through Honey and Mumford, the Conscious Competence model and the Johari Window. It draws on Peter Drucker's The Effective Executive and on Charan and Bossidy's Execution to close the say-do gap, and ends with managing upward and sideways using Gabarro and Kotter, reading the political terrain honestly.

Aims

This programme aims to help managers stepping up to work differently, not harder: knowing their own blind spots, spending their time on what matters most, delivering what they commit to, and building effective relationships with their own manager and with peers they cannot instruct.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Explain why the habits behind early success can limit a manager's impact and identify your own blind spots using the Johari Window.
  2. Apply Drucker's practices and an execution rhythm to focus your time on the right priorities and close the gap between commitment and delivery.
  3. Plan how to manage upward and influence sideways, using your manager's priorities, colleagues' currencies and an honest reading of the political terrain.

What you'll develop

Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:

  1. Explain why habits that earned your promotion, such as winning too much and adding too much value, can limit you once your impact depends on others.
  2. Distinguish a good manager from an excellent one using the four disciplines of self awareness, personal effectiveness, managing upward and across, and developing others.
  3. Use Honey and Mumford's four learning styles to choose development that sticks for you and to coach each team member in the way they learn.
  4. Apply the Conscious Competence model to slow down and make your own automatic skills explicit enough to pass on.
  5. Distinguish efficiency from effectiveness and apply Drucker's five practices of effectiveness to your own working week.
  6. Apply Gabarro and Kotter's four steps to understand your manager's world and build an upward relationship based on mutual dependence.
