When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

Who It's For

Capable managers ready to step up their performance and impact

Overview

This half-day programme follows the move from good manager to high performing manager, starting with yourself and widening out to others. It draws on Goldsmith, the Johari Window and Drucker's The Effective Executive for self-awareness and personal effectiveness, on Gabarro and Kotter for managing upward and sideways, and on Gallup, Sutton and Adobe's Check-In for coaching, engagement, toxic behaviour and performance systems. McChrystal's Team of Teams extends the view to many teams at once, and the turnarounds at Ford and Xerox show the frameworks working together.

Aims

This programme aims to help capable managers make the shift from good to great: leading themselves with discipline and self-awareness, building productive relationships in every direction, and creating the conditions in which individuals and teams consistently do their best work.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Explain how the step up to higher performance changes what a manager must do, and identify personal habits and blind spots to address.
  2. Apply coaching, engagement and performance management practices that get the best from people and address toxic behaviour and underperformance early.
  3. Plan how to manage upward, influence peers and coordinate across teams, drawing on documented turnarounds and the Team of Teams model.

What you'll develop

Across this Explore, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Explain why habits that earned your promotion, such as winning too much and adding too much value, can limit you once your impact depends on others.
  2. Distinguish efficiency from effectiveness and apply Drucker's five practices of effectiveness to your own working week.
  3. Apply Gabarro and Kotter's four steps to understand your manager's world and build an upward relationship based on mutual dependence.
  4. Explain how Mulally's turnaround at Ford and Mulcahy's at Xerox apply Goldsmith, the Johari Window, Drucker, Charan and Gabarro and Kotter.
  5. Apply Sutton's aftermath, target and pattern tests to distinguish toxic behaviour from honest challenge or an occasional bad day.
  6. Explain why an efficient hierarchy struggles when speed and complexity rise, and distinguish efficiency from adaptability.
