About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Overview

As responsibility grows, your own effectiveness sets the effectiveness of everyone who depends on you. This module draws on Peter Drucker's The Effective Executive, including his five practices and his discipline for managing time, and on Ram Charan and Larry Bossidy's Execution, with Bossidy's AlliedSignal operating reviews as the case. It shows how to work on the right things and then close the say-do gap. A high performing manager's results depend as much on their own manager and on peers they cannot instruct as on their team. Using Gabarro and Kotter's Managing Your Boss and its four-step model, this module covers understanding your manager's world, keeping information flowing upward, influencing sideways through colleagues' currency and your own reliability, and reading the political terrain honestly, illustrated by a composite cross-functional budget case.

What you'll develop

In this Bitesize, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Distinguish efficiency from effectiveness and apply Drucker's five practices of effectiveness to your own working week.
  2. Use Drucker's three step time discipline of recording, managing and consolidating to protect time for the work only you can do.
  3. Identify the causes of the say-do gap and apply Charan and Bossidy's remedies, including a single named owner per outcome and a regular review rhythm.
  4. Apply Gabarro and Kotter's four steps to understand your manager's world and build an upward relationship based on mutual dependence.
  5. Plan a proactive flow of information upward so that your manager is never forced to ask what is happening.
