Overview and Outcomes.
Who It's For
Leaders, board members and commissioners in housing, councils, the NHS, mental health services and charities in Wales and England.
Overview
This half-day Explore looks at how services can hold people rather than lose them. It begins with Housing First, from Sam Tsemberis to Homeless Link's seven principles, and trauma-informed and psychologically informed environments. It then turns to lived experience and peer leadership through Baljeet Sandhu's three forms of expertise, and to safeguarding with the Mental Capacity Act 2005. System working follows, with the Plymouth Alliance for Complex Needs, alongside staff wellbeing and moral injury. It closes with Results-Based Accountability and two cases: The Thistle in Glasgow and the deaths of people experiencing homelessness.
Aims
This Explore aims to develop leaders who offer people a settled home and fair, trauma-informed support, involve people with lived experience as partners, safeguard with curiosity, build partnerships that share risk, look after their staff, and measure change that matters in people's lives.
In summary, you will be able to:
- Assess how well your service offers stable homes, fair boundaries and support that does not exclude.
- Build partnerships and peer roles that share risk, value lived experience and sustain staff.
- Report on outcomes in ways that are honest about who is missing and what has changed.
What you'll develop
Across this Explore, you will develop the ability to:
- Explain how Housing First differs from the staircase model, and why it treats a home as a foundation for recovery rather than a reward.
- Plan practical steps to make exclusion the exception in your service, from reviewing every exclusion to redesigning spaces and rules with residents.
- Design involvement and peer roles that build people rather than drain them, with fair pay, supervision, progression and a real place in commissioning.
- Explain why labels such as lifestyle choice and not engaging can close down thinking, and use professional curiosity and respectful uncertainty instead.
- Plan the steps to move a partnership from paper to practice, ready for new duties to collaborate in Wales and England.
- Assess whether wellbeing in your organisation is treated as a personal duty or an organisational responsibility, using commitments such as protected supervision and humane caseloads.
- Distinguish outputs from outcomes using Friedman's three questions, and identify how targets invite ratchet effects, threshold effects, output distortion and cream-skimming.
- Plan your next ninety days using the five shifts toward the person, the organisational matrix and questions for your board.
