About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Who It's For

Managers and senior leaders who want to speak up and back others

Overview

This Focus turns insight into action. It starts with practice: Herminia Ibarra's possible selves and authenticity paradox, an honest look at the power posing debate, Bandura's mastery experience as a mastery ladder, reappraising nerves as excitement, Oettingen's WOOP method and Atul Gawande taking a coach. It then moves into the room, examining why capable people stay silent, Detert and Edmondson's implicit voice theories, Gruenfeld's playing high and playing low and the backlash effect. The third module looks at leading others who doubt themselves, through wise feedback, psychological safety and the difference between mentoring and sponsorship. A capstone reads the stories of Michelle Obama, Tom Hanks and an illustrative Welsh head of service, ending with a 90-day plan.

Aims

This programme aims to develop leaders who build confidence through deliberate preparation and practice, speak up and stay steady under challenge, and use feedback, sponsorship and better workplace design so that the people around them are not held back by doubt.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Plan for a specific high-stakes moment using a mastery ladder and the WOOP method, building confidence through preparation rather than waiting to feel ready.
  2. Lead with presence in meetings and under challenge, choosing deliberately between playing high and playing low and making your work visible through evidence.
  3. Use wise feedback, sponsorship and changes to criteria, onboarding and meetings to reduce the conditions that keep producing doubt in your team.

What you'll develop

Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:

  1. Use a mastery ladder and Oettingen's WOOP method to plan for a specific high-stakes moment.
  2. Choose deliberately between playing high and playing low, and make your work visible through evidence rather than self-promotion.
  3. Apply practical moves to speak up, hold your ground under challenge and prepare for a high-stakes meeting.
  4. Use wise feedback and sponsorship to turn your belief in a colleague into high standards and real opportunity.
  5. Plan changes to criteria, feedback, onboarding and meetings that reduce the conditions that keep producing doubt.
  6. Assess your own position across eight areas and set out a 90-day plan to build grounded confidence and lift others.
