When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Who It's For

Leaders at any level who want to work with self-doubt, not against it

Overview

This half-day programme brings together all nine modules of the topic in four stages. It opens with understanding: the impostor phenomenon from Clance and Imes onwards, Valerie Young's five competence types, and the three layers, personal, transitional and structural, behind doubt. The inner work follows, with Bandura's sources of self-efficacy, Moore and Healy on overconfidence, calibrated confidence, and talking back to the inner critic with Ellis's ABCDE model and Neff's three components of self-compassion. Practice and presence come next: Ibarra's possible selves, Oettingen's WOOP method, silence at work and Gruenfeld on playing high and playing low. Finally it turns to leading others through wise feedback, sponsorship and psychological safety, with a capstone built around Michelle Obama, Tom Hanks and Rhian, an illustrative head of service in a fictional Welsh council.

Aims

The aim is to develop leaders who can work with doubt rather than be run by it, build confidence deliberately and judge it fairly in others, and change the conditions in their teams and organisations that keep capable people quiet or out of the running.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Explain where impostor feelings come from, distinguishing personal, transitional and structural causes, and judge popular confidence claims against the research evidence.
  2. Apply tools such as the mastery ladder, WOOP, the ABCDE model and self-compassion to build calibrated confidence for the moments that matter most.
  3. Lead colleagues who doubt themselves through wise feedback, sponsorship and psychological safety, and set out a 90-day plan for yourself and your team.

What you'll develop

Across this Explore, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Recognise the stages of Clance's impostor cycle and her six characteristics in your own work and in others.
  2. Apply calibration questions to separate what is yours to work on from what you should raise with your organisation.
  3. Use Ellis's ABCDE model and Neff's three components of self-compassion to examine and reframe a harsh inner voice.
  4. Use a mastery ladder and Oettingen's WOOP method to plan for a specific high-stakes moment.
  5. Use wise feedback and sponsorship to turn your belief in a colleague into high standards and real opportunity.
  6. Assess your own position across eight areas and set out a 90-day plan to build grounded confidence and lift others.
