Course overview.
This half-day programme brings together all nine modules of the topic in four stages. It opens with understanding: the impostor phenomenon from Clance and Imes onwards, Valerie Young's five competence types, and the three layers, personal, transitional and structural, behind doubt. The inner work follows, with Bandura's sources of self-efficacy, Moore and Healy on overconfidence, calibrated confidence, and talking back to the inner critic with Ellis's ABCDE model and Neff's three components of self-compassion. Practice and presence come next: Ibarra's possible selves, Oettingen's WOOP method, silence at work and Gruenfeld on playing high and playing low. Finally it turns to leading others through wise feedback, sponsorship and psychological safety, with a capstone built around Michelle Obama, Tom Hanks and Rhian, an illustrative head of service in a fictional Welsh council.

The modules.
Focus · Understanding self-doubt
5 modules · 3 hours01Foundations: What Imposter Syndrome Is, and Is NotFree Taster40 min
This module sets out what the impostor phenomenon is, and is not, from Clance and Imes' 1978 research to Bravata and colleagues' 2020 systematic review. It examines why capable people feel it most, why it is not a diagnosis, why the popular 70 per cent figure lacks a research source, and how Clance's impostor cycle and six characteristics keep the feeling going.
Bitesize: Naming the doubt, with module 102Five Faces of Imposter Feelings38 min
This module explores how the rules you hold about competence shape the doubt you feel, using Valerie Young's five competence types: the Perfectionist, the Expert, the Natural Genius, the Soloist and the Superhuman. It examines Curran and Hill's evidence that perfectionism is rising, Gaudreau's distinction between perfectionism and excellencism, and Dweck's growth mindset, with one practical move for each type.
Bitesize: Naming the doubt, with module 203Where It Comes From: Personal, Social and Structural38 min
This module examines where impostor feelings come from across three layers: personal, transitional and structural. It draws on Tulshyan and Burey's critique of the label, Eagly and Karau's role congruity theory, Steele and Aronson's stereotype threat, Friedman and Laurison's The Class Ceiling and Walton and Cohen's belonging study, helping you tell learned doubt from doubt the room hands you.
Bitesize: Naming the doubt, with module 304The Science of Confidence38 min
This module sets out where confidence really comes from, using Albert Bandura's four sources of self-efficacy and Baumeister and colleagues' review of self-esteem. It examines why confidence is mistaken for competence, the contested Dunning-Kruger effect, Moore and Healy's three forms of overconfidence and how an unsourced 60 per cent statistic travelled, so you can aim for calibrated rather than maximum confidence.
Bitesize: Quieting the inner critic, with module 405Rethinking the Inner Voice36 min
This module explores how to notice, question and rewrite impostor thoughts that arrive sounding like facts. It covers Basima Tewfik's 2022 research on the interpersonal upside and personal cost of impostor thoughts, Aaron Beck's thinking traps, Albert Ellis's ABCDE model and Kristin Neff's three components of self-compassion, with practical tools including an evidence file and five prompts for talking back.
