About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Who It's For

Leaders who want to choose their approach to leadership deliberately

Overview

This programme brings together three foundations of thoughtful leadership: the ideas, the strategy and the self. It maps a century of leadership research, from trait theory and the Managerial Grid to transformational, authentic and complexity leadership, then explores how strategy becomes reality through Porter, Mintzberg, Rumelt, Kotter, Collins and Playing to Win. It closes by turning the lens inward, with emotional intelligence, values, character strengths, ethical lenses and moral courage, alongside resilience, self-compassion and the imposter phenomenon. The half day connects how leaders think, what they set out to achieve and who they are.

Aims

This programme aims to deepen leaders' thinking about leadership itself, connecting theory, strategy and self-knowledge so they can choose their approach deliberately, lead strategic change with purpose and act consistently from values they genuinely hold, especially when the pressure is on.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Explain how the major schools of leadership thought developed and apply contingency and situational models to judge whether a style fits the situation.
  2. Assess the strength of a strategy and plan how significant change will be carried through, using Rumelt's kernel, Kotter's eight steps and Level 5 leadership.
  3. Apply emotional intelligence, values and ethical lenses to your own leadership, and plan self-leadership strategies that sustain moral courage and resilience.

What you'll develop

Across this Explore, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Explain how each major school of leadership thought, from trait theory to complexity leadership, responded to the limits of the one before it.
  2. Apply the Managerial Grid, Fiedler's contingency model and Hersey and Blanchard's situational model to judge whether a leadership style fits the people and situation in front of you.
  3. Compare the planning, positioning, emergent and kernel schools of strategy and assess whether a strategy contains a genuine diagnosis, guiding policy and coherent action.
  4. Apply Kotter's eight steps, tipping point leadership and Level 5 leadership to plan how significant change is carried through an organisation.
  5. Distinguish stated from revealed values and use Goleman's five components of emotional intelligence to assess how you show up under pressure.
  6. Apply the consequences, duty and character lenses to an ethical dilemma and plan the words you would use to act with moral courage.
