Who It's For
Leaders facing complex situations and leading teams across settings
Overview
Leadership is tested in real conditions: uncertainty, teams, context and consequence. This programme starts with complexity, using VUCA, wicked problems, Cynefin, Heifetz's adaptive challenges, sensemaking and the pre-mortem. It moves to collective and team leadership through Tuckman, Lencioni, shared leadership, followership, conflict modes and the GROW model, then explores how leadership flexes across sector, national culture, organisational life stage and crisis. A compendium of six real leaders, including Nelson Mandela, Muhammad Yunus and Paul Polman, brings the frameworks together through four questions: diagnose, decide, distribute and sustain.
Aims
This programme aims to build practical leadership judgement for messy, real situations, helping leaders read complexity, share leadership with their teams and adapt to context, while holding steady on the values and commitments that should not change from one setting to the next.
In summary, you will be able to:
- Diagnose the nature of a situation using Cynefin, the Stacey Matrix and the adaptive and technical distinction, and decide how to act under uncertainty.
- Apply team development, shared leadership, conflict modes and coaching conversations to build trust and distribute decisions within your team.
- Assess how sector, culture and circumstance shape a leadership situation, and use four questions to choose the frameworks that fit real cases.
What you'll develop
Across this Explore, you will develop the ability to:
- Diagnose whether a situation is clear, complicated, complex or chaotic using VUCA, Cynefin, the Stacey Matrix and the distinction between tame and wicked problems.
- Distinguish technical problems from adaptive challenges and use sensemaking, the OODA loop and the pre-mortem to decide and act under uncertainty.
- Identify a team's developmental stage and diagnose its dysfunctions from the foundation of trust upward, using Tuckman, Katzenbach and Smith, and Lencioni.
- Apply shared leadership, followership and situational delegation to decide which decisions, not just tasks, to give away to your team.
- Compare what private, public and social sector organisations optimise for and explain how that changes the way good leadership is expressed.
- Use the four questions of diagnose, decide, distribute and sustain to read a real leadership situation, including your own.
