Overview

What if change started with what already works? This module explores Cooperrider and Srivastva's appreciative inquiry and its 4-D cycle, Bushe and Kassam's evidence on when it transforms, positive deviance from Pascale and the Sternins, and Bolden's review of distributed leadership. Compassionate Frome and the Wigan Deal show communities as partners rather than recipients, and why asset-based working is a culture to grow, not a tool to adopt. Every system project is a change project, and scale magnifies everything, including silence. This module covers how UK government assures major projects through NISTA, the National Audit Office's four root causes of programme trouble, optimism bias and Lovallo and Kahneman's outside view, a technology-enabled change grid, and the NAO's evidence on reorganisation. Birmingham City Council's Oracle programme shows what happens when these lessons are missed together.

What you'll develop

In this Bitesize, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Describe the 4-D cycle of appreciative inquiry and assess when it produces transformational rather than merely positive change.
  2. Use positive deviance to find and learn from local outliers, with care about luck and context.
  3. Plan a hybrid mix of held and shared decisions and apply asset-based lessons from Frome and Wigan.
  4. Use the NAO's four root causes of scope, planning, interdependencies and oversight as a health check on any programme.
  5. Explain optimism bias and apply the outside view and reference class forecasting when reviewing a business case.
