When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Overview

Most conflict in public services happens inside teams and across professional boundaries. This module uses Tuckman's stages and Lencioni's five dysfunctions to read a team, Lau and Murnighan's faultlines and newer meta-analyses on when divisions harm, Tajfel and Turner's social identity theory, a corrected account of Robbers Cave, and Edmondson's psychological safety. The East Kent maternity investigation shows why a common purpose is a safety system. Much conflict in public services is caused by change itself, and fair process matters most when outcomes hurt. This module uses Colquitt's four dimensions of justice and Brockner and Wiesenfeld's work on process and outcome, then examines P and O Ferries, the Birmingham bin strike, the Employment Rights Act 2025, the dismissal and re-engagement Code and the Welsh social partnership duty, ending with six moves for contested change.

What you'll develop

In this Bitesize, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Use Tuckman's stages and Lencioni's pyramid to identify what a team needs from its leader.
  2. Explain how faultlines and social identity create us and them, and identify decisions that activate dormant faultlines.
  3. Apply psychological safety and superordinate goals to help concerns cross professional boundaries.
  4. Distinguish distributive, procedural, interpersonal and informational justice and explain why process matters most when outcomes are poor.
  5. Describe the legal framework from P and O Ferries to the Employment Rights Act 2025 and the Welsh social partnership duty.
