When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Overview

Conflict is information before it is a problem. This module gives leaders a shared vocabulary using Karen Jehn's task, relationship and process conflict, tests the popular claim that task conflict is good against the meta-analyses, and draws on Lewis Coser's functions of conflict and Louis Pondy's five stages. The Handforth Parish Council meeting and UK data on the cost of conflict show why how a conflict ends matters. Escalation rarely feels like escalation from the inside. This module offers a map of how conflict grows, using Glasl's nine stages, Deutsch's crude law of social relations, Pruitt and Kim's conflict spiral, and research on attribution from Ross to Malle. The 2021 Best Value inspection of Liverpool City Council shows how suppressed challenge escalates quietly, and five practical moves help leaders act while talking still works.

What you'll develop

In this Bitesize, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Distinguish task, relationship and process conflict and explain what the meta-analytic evidence says about each.
  2. Use Coser's and Pondy's ideas to read silence, latent conditions and the aftermath of a conflict episode.
  3. Apply lessons from Handforth and UK cost data to clarify authority and close conflicts well.
  4. Identify the stage a conflict has reached using Glasl's nine stages and recognise the move from win-win to win-lose.
  5. Explain how the crude law, the conflict spiral and attribution errors drive escalation, and why residues persist.
