About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Who It's For

Leaders who want to spot, read and respond to conflict early

Overview

Conflict is information before it is a problem, and how a conflict ends matters as much as how it starts. This programme gives leaders a shared vocabulary using Jehn's types of conflict and Coser's functions of conflict, maps escalation with Glasl's nine stages and the conflict spiral, and compares the main conflict style models. It explores difficult conversations, conflict in teams and across professional boundaries, and the justice and industrial relations questions raised by contested change. It closes with the leader as instrument, from the holding environment to emotion regulation, and three capstone cases: Port Talbot, Universal Credit and Northumbria Healthcare.

Aims

The aim is to help leaders recognise conflict early, read where it comes from and how it is escalating, and respond with skill: choosing a fitting style, holding difficult conversations, leading fairly through contested change and staying steady themselves, so that conflict becomes a source of insight rather than lasting harm.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Diagnose the sources, type and stage of escalation of a conflict, using Jehn, Coser, Glasl and research on attribution and the conflict spiral.
  2. Choose a conflict style and plan a difficult conversation that moves towards shared understanding, drawing on dual concern models and the three conversations.
  3. Lead teams through contested change using organisational justice, psychological safety and emotion regulation, applying lessons from Port Talbot, Universal Credit and Northumbria Healthcare.

What you'll develop

Across this Explore, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Distinguish task, relationship and process conflict and explain what the meta-analytic evidence says about each.
  2. Identify the stage a conflict has reached using Glasl's nine stages and recognise the move from win-win to win-lose.
  3. Describe the what happened, feelings and identity conversations and prepare for all three before a difficult conversation.
  4. Use Tuckman's stages and Lencioni's pyramid to identify what a team needs from its leader.
  5. Explain how a leader regulates distress within a productive range and keeps role distinct from self.
  6. Apply several frameworks at once to analyse a real case of change and conflict.
