About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Who It's For

Leaders handling difficult conversations and conflict across professional boundaries

Overview

There is no single best way to meet conflict, so the craft lies in choosing well. This programme compares dual concern models from Blake and Mouton to Thomas and Kilmann, and explores difficult conversations through Stone, Patton and Heen, Nonviolent Communication and Radical Candor. It reads conflict in teams and across professional boundaries using social identity theory, faultlines and psychological safety, then examines change that creates conflict through organisational justice, industrial relations and the Welsh social partnership duty. It turns to the leader as instrument, from the holding environment to emotion regulation, and closes with Port Talbot, Universal Credit and Northumbria Healthcare.

Aims

The aim is to develop leaders who can meet conflict with choice rather than habit: holding difficult conversations with candour and care, working across team and professional boundaries, leading contested change with fair process and voice, and looking after themselves well enough to stay steady when the pressure is high.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Distinguish conflict styles and explain how social identity, faultlines and organisational justice shape conflict within teams, across boundaries and during contested change.
  2. Plan and hold a difficult conversation that moves towards a learning conversation, drawing on the three conversations, Nonviolent Communication and Radical Candor.
  3. Lead contested change with fair process, voice and personal steadiness, using emotion regulation, reflective practice and lessons from Port Talbot, Universal Credit and Northumbria Healthcare.

What you'll develop

Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:

  1. Compare the dual concern models and choose a conflict mode by weighing the stakes and the relationship.
  2. Describe the what happened, feelings and identity conversations and prepare for all three before a difficult conversation.
  3. Use Tuckman's stages and Lencioni's pyramid to identify what a team needs from its leader.
  4. Distinguish distributive, procedural, interpersonal and informational justice and explain why process matters most when outcomes are poor.
  5. Explain how a leader regulates distress within a productive range and keeps role distinct from self.
  6. Apply several frameworks at once to analyse a real case of change and conflict.
