Who It's For
Leaders and people with lived experience building meaningful roles
Overview
Lived experience now appears everywhere in public service language, and a phrase used everywhere can lose its meaning. This programme sets out what lived experience and lived expertise mean, drawing on Baljeet Sandhu's three forms of expertise and Miranda Fricker's ideas of testimonial and hermeneutical injustice. It explores lived experience leadership and the conditions that sustain it, roles in governance, inspection and boards read through Arnstein's ladder, and the peer workforce, drawing on Shery Mead. It closes on telling your story safely, with consent as an ongoing process and attention to emotional labour.
Aims
The aim is to help leaders and people with lived experience create meaningful roles in which lived expertise shapes decisions, from peer support to board seats, with the pay, support, power and care for wellbeing that make involvement genuine and sustainable rather than symbolic.
In summary, you will be able to:
- Explain what lived experience and lived expertise mean and assess how your organisation treats them using a spectrum from feedback to leadership.
- Design lived experience roles in services, peer support and governance with the pay, supervision, support and power needed to sustain them.
- Apply consent as an ongoing process and a sharing protocol that protects people who tell their stories from harm and re-traumatisation.
What you'll develop
Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:
- Distinguish lived experience, lived expertise and experts by experience, and explain why lived experience is a form of knowledge rather than only feedback.
- Explain Fricker's testimonial and hermeneutical injustice and identify where credibility is unevenly given in your own organisation.
- Explain Sandhu's lived, learnt and practice expertise and use them to identify which forms are missing from your leadership team.
- Compare governance roles, from reference groups to board seats, and assess what each position can realistically change.
- Explain the four core qualities of peer support and use them to review a peer role in your own organisation.
- Distinguish story as expertise from story as spectacle and explain why sharing lived experience is emotional labour.
