Who It's For

Leaders responsible for involving people with lived experience

Overview

Involving people with lived experience brings responsibilities, and good intentions are not enough. This programme sets out trauma-informed engagement through the SAMHSA principles and the Trauma-Informed Wales framework, showing why predictability is a kindness. It makes the case for paying and valuing lived expertise, using NIHR rates as a benchmark and handling benefits and tax with care. It confronts tokenism through Arnstein's ladder, Peter Beresford's models and the 4Pi National Involvement Standards, then reads the Poverty Truth Commission, Social Security Scotland's Experience Panels and Recovery Colleges through five questions.

Aims

This programme aims to develop leaders who do involvement right: creating safe, trauma-informed conditions, recognising lived expertise fairly through payment and other forms of value, and sharing real power, so that involvement is judged by what changes rather than by how many people were heard.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Apply trauma-informed principles from SAMHSA and the Trauma-Informed Wales framework to the venues, language, choices and conversations involved in engagement.
  2. Plan a recognition and payment policy that values lived expertise, uses an appropriate benchmark and handles benefits and tax with care.
  3. Assess involvement in your organisation for tokenism using Arnstein's ladder, Beresford's models and the 4Pi standards, and judge it by what changes.

What you'll develop

Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:

  1. Explain why power, control, belief and trust make trauma relevant to engagement, and describe the SAMHSA and Trauma-Informed Wales principles.
  2. Identify which Trauma-Informed Wales practice level each role in your engagement work requires.
  3. Explain the four reasons for paying people for lived experience work, including how unpaid involvement narrows who takes part.
  4. Use a recognised benchmark and a menu of recognition while protecting people's benefits and tax position through choice and independent advice.
  5. Identify common patterns of tokenism and locate them on Arnstein's ladder of citizen participation.
  6. Apply the five questions of context, power, conditions, change and transfer to any case of lived experience involvement.
