Who It's For

Managers making everyday decisions on hiring, pay, leave and performance

Overview

This half-day programme covers the employment law every manager needs for day-to-day decisions. It starts with the layers of law, Fair Work Wales and employment status, then sets out the staged timetable of the Employment Rights Act 2025. It moves through recruitment and onboarding, pay, hours and holidays, family rights and flexible working, and equality at work under the Equality Act 2010. It closes on health, absence and capability and on managing performance fairly, guided by leading cases such as Uber v Aslam and Harpur Trust v Brazel and by the principle that the law is the floor and fairness the standard.

Aims

The aim is to build managers' confidence and judgement across the everyday employment decisions they make, from hiring and contracts to pay, leave, adjustments and performance, so that people are treated lawfully and fairly and problems are addressed early, with support before sanction.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Explain how employment status, contracts and the Employment Rights Act 2025 shape the rights of the people you manage.
  2. Apply equality law, family rights and pay and working time rules to recruitment, flexible working, adjustments and everyday management decisions.
  3. Manage absence and underperformance fairly, distinguishing capability from conduct and using support and improvement plans before formal action.

What you'll develop

Across this Explore, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Describe the four layers of employment law, from statute and case law to Codes of Practice and organisational policy, and explain how firm each one is.
  2. Distinguish which Employment Rights Act 2025 changes are already in force, which are due on a set date, and which are expected in 2027 on dates still to be fixed.
  3. Identify how affinity and confirmation bias shape selection decisions and use structured, evidence-based interviewing to reduce them.
  4. Identify the main statutory family and caring leave rights and explain the protections that apply during pregnancy and maternity.
  5. Distinguish direct discrimination, indirect discrimination, discrimination arising from disability, harassment and victimisation, and explain when each can or cannot be justified.
  6. Distinguish capability from conduct and explain why naming the reason first determines the right procedure.
