Overview and Outcomes.
Who It's For
Senior leaders making fast, high-stakes or ethically charged decisions
Overview
Under real pressure, nobody runs the six step model, and some decisions are clashes of value rather than gaps in information. Under pressure, with integrity explores how good judgement holds up in both. Gary Klein's recognition primed decision model and Captain Sullenberger's Hudson landing show how experts decide fast. The Delphi Method shows how to gather expert judgement without the loudest voice winning, and Schwartz's paradox of choice and decision fatigue turn attention to the decision maker. Utilitarian, deontological and virtue lenses frame ethical choices, and a capstone reads Robodebt, Columbia and Winter Storm Uri.
Aims
This programme aims to develop leaders who decide well when time, information and energy are short and values pull in different directions, building expertise through review, protecting judgement from fatigue and naming hard trade offs openly rather than hiding them in a number.
In summary, you will be able to:
- Explain how experts decide under time pressure and when pattern recognition misleads, using the recognition primed decision model and after action review.
- Apply the Delphi Method and practical responses to decision fatigue to protect the quality of individual and group judgement.
- Assess an ethical dilemma through utilitarian, deontological and virtue based lenses and name the trade off openly to those affected.
What you'll develop
Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:
- Explain Klein's recognition primed decision model and why expert recognition under pressure is not guesswork.
- Distinguish the three variations of the model and identify which one applies to a decision you face.
- Explain how anonymity, controlled feedback and iteration each remove a specific distortion in group judgement.
- Explain the three mechanisms behind the paradox of choice and design a shortlist of three or four differentiated options.
- Identify when a decision is an ethical choice about competing values rather than an analysis problem.
- Analyse a decision failure by asking when somebody knew, what the warning met, and who would have had to lose.
