When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

Overview and Outcomes.
Overview
A strategic choice is a moment; strategic management is the system that keeps it alive. This module places strategic management alongside strategic thinking, leadership and governance, introduces Wheelen and Hunger's four stage cycle of scanning, formulating, implementing and evaluating, and shows how the cycle stalls. It then sets out the corporate, business and functional levels of strategy and the discipline of naming the level first. Most mission, vision and values statements are generic enough that nobody could disagree with them, which means they guide nobody. Drawing on Rumelt's warning against fluff and his idea of a guiding policy, this module offers the interchangeability test for missions, uses Patagonia as a mission that rules things out, and sets practical standards for visions you can check and values that survive a hard, costly decision.
What you'll develop
In this Bitesize, you will develop the ability to:
- Distinguish strategic management from strategic thinking, strategic leadership and governance, and identify which kind of problem an organisation is facing.
- Describe the four stages of the strategic management cycle and assess which stage is weakest and least owned in your own organisation.
- Identify whether a piece of work sits at corporate, business or functional level before it is debated or scrutinised.
- Distinguish the different jobs done by a mission, a vision and a set of values, and identify when they have blurred together.
- Apply the interchangeability test to your own organisation's mission statement and use its four steps to begin a rewrite.
