When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Overview

Some problems need an answer; some need a change in us. This module takes Ronald Heifetz's distinction between technical problems and adaptive challenges across organisational boundaries, where nobody holds command. It introduces the balcony, an adaptive work matrix and a five step practice for giving the work back, reads the Cardiff Model for Violence Prevention as adaptive work, and names the familiar forms of work avoidance in partnerships. Many groups cling to habitual answers. This module explores Otto Scharmer's Theory U: its five movements, four levels of listening, the three voices of judgement, cynicism and fear, letting go and letting come, and prototyping as learning by doing. It reads u.lab Scotland as Theory U spreading through a public service system, and is honest that the approach is widely used but has seen little controlled testing.

What you'll develop

In this Bitesize, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Distinguish technical problems from adaptive challenges and explain why applying technical authority to adaptive work fails.
  2. Use the adaptive work across boundaries matrix and the five step practice to give the work back to partners who must change.
  3. Identify forms of work avoidance in a partnership and plan how to hold the question long enough for real learning.
  4. Describe the five movements of the U and Scharmer's four levels of listening, from downloading to generative.
  5. Use the three openings of mind, heart and will, and small fast prototypes, to move a stuck partnership conversation towards action.
