When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Overview

Today's problems often come from yesterday's solutions. This module introduces the system archetypes Peter Senge popularised in The Fifth Discipline: fixes that fail, shifting the burden, limits to growth, eroding goals, the tragedy of the commons and success to the successful. It reads temporary accommodation in England as a shifting the burden pattern and offers a five step process for using archetypes without turning them into blame. A system has many parts you could change, so which are worth the effort? This module works through Donella Meadows's twelve leverage points, from shallow numbers to deep goals and paradigms, and explains why most effort goes to the weakest levers. It examines information flows through the Cardiff Model for Violence Prevention and reads Wales's 5p carrier bag charge as leverage that changed a default and then a norm.

What you'll develop

In this Bitesize, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Describe the six common system archetypes and identify the loops, delays and side effects that drive each one.
  2. Apply the shifting the burden archetype to a public service pressure such as temporary accommodation, separating the symptomatic and fundamental solutions.
  3. Use archetypes as an invitation rather than an accusation, testing your diagnosis with the people who live the problem.
  4. Explain Meadows's twelve leverage points grouped from shallow to deep, and why most organisational effort goes to the weakest.
  5. Identify information flows, rules and defaults in your own system that could act as higher leverage than budgets or targets.
