When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

Who It's For

Public service leaders, board members and digital, data and transformation leads responsible for AI and new ways of working

Overview

AI is already in use across public services, and leaders remain accountable for every decision it touches. Part of the flagship Leading with data and digital, this day begins with the ground rules: good data, buying from suppliers, the law including the EU AI Act, and fairness, drawing on Kleinberg, Mullainathan and Raghavan and on Chouldechova. It then turns to oversight that works, lessons from Robodebt and the Dutch childcare benefits scandal, and board assurance through the Three Lines Model and transparency. Agile follows, from the Manifesto and Scrum to Lean, Kanban, design thinking and the Spotify story. It concludes with AI literacy and adoption, with Edmondson and Bridges.

Aims

The course is there to help leaders keep people in charge of digital change: setting clear ownership and meaningful oversight for every AI system, asking suppliers the awkward questions before signature, obtaining real assurance rather than reassurance, and helping teams work in short cycles of learning while protecting how staff build judgement.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Apply five tests of data quality and supplier due diligence questions before an AI system is bought or built.
  2. Distinguish hollow from meaningful human oversight, and plan proportionate assurance for AI using the Three Lines Model and the NIST cycle.
  3. Lead a team through AI adoption with an acceptable use policy, short cycles of experimentation and skills development that protects learning.

What you'll develop

By the end of this Immerse, you will be able to:

  1. Explain why AI outputs inherit the quality of their data and why named ownership of data sets matters.
  2. Identify the main areas of existing law that apply when AI is used in a public service.
  3. Describe what went wrong in Robodebt, the Toeslagenaffaire and Horizon, and who bore the harm.
  4. Explain why transparency underpins public trust in AI, using the ATRS, the transparency ladder and the lessons of the Dutch childcare benefits scandal.
  5. Explain how the three pillars of transparency, inspection and adaptation, supported by the five values, make Scrum's empiricism work.
  6. Distinguish a pilot from an experiment, and use Ries's terms, minimum viable product, validated learning, pivot and persevere, precisely.
  7. Explain why an annual budget for uncertain work fixes scope too early, and compare project funding with funding stable teams and products.
  8. Explain what shadow AI is and why bans tend to drive use underground rather than stop it.
