About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Overview

Wellbeing, resilience and adaptability are often treated as one idea, and that confusion leads to the wrong interventions. This foundation module separates the three, uses the HSE Management Standards to name six sources of work stress, and draws on Bakker and Demerouti's Job Demands-Resources model, Mullainathan and Shafir's bandwidth tax and Maslach and Leiter's three dimensions of burnout, with Microsoft Japan as a real example. Resilience is easy to talk about and hard to define. This module offers a working definition, shows that resilience depends on context and operates at individual, team and organisational levels, and uses Diane Coutu's three building blocks, with the Stockdale Paradox as a case. It also introduces Tedeschi and Calhoun's post-traumatic growth and is clear about what resilience is not.

What you'll develop

In this Bitesize, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Distinguish wellbeing as a state, resilience as a capacity and adaptability as a skill, and explain why each needs a different intervention.
  2. Use the HSE Management Standards and the Job Demands-Resources model to identify what is driving strain in a team, including during organisational change.
  3. Describe the pathway from pressure to strain to burnout, recognise its three dimensions, and identify where recovery and job design offer chances to intervene.
  4. Explain why resilience depends on context and distinguish its individual, team and organisational levels.
  5. Describe Coutu's three building blocks of resilience and apply them to a recent setback, using the Stockdale Paradox to distinguish facing reality from blind optimism.
