Who It's For
Leaders managing workforce change and public trust as AI arrives
Overview
AI changes tasks before it changes jobs, and how leaders handle that change will shape trust inside and outside the organisation. This programme reads the evidence on AI and work, from IMF and World Economic Forum projections to early signs at the first rung of the career ladder, and sets out the Workforce Partnership Council's principles for doing it with people, not to them. It explores literacy and the expertise pipeline, leading teams through shadow AI with Edmondson and Bridges, and Onora O'Neill on well-placed public trust, before applying everything to two illustrative Welsh cases.
Aims
This programme aims to develop leaders who put people at the centre of AI adoption: protecting entry routes and professional judgement, involving staff and unions as partners in design, and keeping the public's trust by owning what their AI says and making sure nobody is left behind by digital-only services.
In summary, you will be able to:
- Explain why exposure to AI is not replacement and use a task spectrum to decide what to automate, augment or keep human.
- Plan AI adoption with staff and their representatives, including an acceptable use policy, a skills plan and genuine consultation as part of design.
- Assess the public trust implications of an AI service, covering chatbots, consultation analysis and digital exclusion, and set out priority actions for the first ninety days.
What you'll develop
Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:
- Explain why exposure to AI is not the same as replacement and why tasks change before jobs do.
- Describe the Workforce Partnership Council's five principles and the steps it expects before and after a system goes live.
- Describe what AI literacy means at four levels: everyone, managers, specialists, and leaders and boards.
- Explain what shadow AI is and why bans tend to drive use underground rather than stop it.
- Explain why AI can help read consultation responses but must not weigh them, and apply five guard rails for engagement.
- Apply seven lenses to an AI proposal: strategy, data, legal, governance, workforce, literacy and public trust.
