Who It's For

Senior public service leaders responsible for AI strategy, governance and people

Overview

This full-day programme covers the whole of AI for Leaders in depth, built on a single conviction: the human edge in AI is judgement, accountability and trust. It moves from foundations, capability and the productivity evidence to strategy and the UK, Welsh and EU policy landscape; then to data, suppliers, the law, fairness and oversight, tested against Robodebt and Horizon; and finally to jobs, workforce partnership, skills, adoption and public trust. Drawing on writers from Agrawal and Brynjolfsson to Edmondson and Onora O'Neill, it closes with two illustrative Welsh cases and a ninety-day plan.

Aims

This programme aims to develop leaders who can own AI decisions from end to end: setting strategy from the problem, governing data, suppliers and systems lawfully and fairly, and leading staff and communities through change in a way that strengthens rather than spends public trust.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Explain how AI works, what the evidence shows about its value and why its use remains a leadership responsibility under existing law and policy.
  2. Design governance for AI that covers data quality, contracts, legal duties, fairness testing and meaningful oversight informed by public service failures.
  3. Lead AI adoption with staff, unions and the public, and plan priority actions using seven lenses and a maturity assessment of your organisation.

What you'll develop

By the end of this Immerse, you will be able to:

  1. Explain why AI is a leadership question rather than an IT project, and why existing duties of fairness, lawfulness and accountability still apply.
  2. Explain why an AI strategy should start with the problem and rest on data, people, governance and trust foundations.
  3. Explain why accountability for an AI system stays with your organisation and choose whether to build, buy, partner or wait.
  4. Describe what went wrong in Robodebt, the Toeslagenaffaire and Horizon, and who bore the harm.
  5. Describe what AI literacy means at four levels: everyone, managers, specialists, and leaders and boards.
  6. Apply seven lenses to an AI proposal: strategy, data, legal, governance, workforce, literacy and public trust.
