When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

Overview and Outcomes.
Who It's For
Managers forming a new team or service from scratch
Overview
A new team or service is built twice, once on paper and once in the habits people form in the first weeks. Starting from scratch begins with recruiting deliberately, interviewing for evidence over charm, lawful selection and onboarding, and the pay, hours and holiday decisions managers make from day one. It then draws on Katzenbach and Smith, Hackman and Tuckman to set purpose, goals, roles and team charters, and on Edmondson and Schein to build trust, psychological safety and culture by precedent. Ibarra on professional networks, hybrid and distributed working, and teaming across professional and organisational boundaries complete a day focused on building well from the outset.
Aims
The aim is to help managers form a new team or service with intention: recruiting fairly and well, setting clear purpose and roles, and building culture and trust from the first day rather than repairing them later. It develops the practical judgement and legal awareness to get the foundations right while relationships are still forming.
In summary, you will be able to:
- Plan a fair, lawful and evidence-based approach to recruiting, selecting and onboarding people into a new team or service.
- Design the purpose, goals, roles and charter of a new team so that expectations are clear from the start.
- Build trust, psychological safety and a healthy culture across co-located, hybrid and multi-agency settings through what you consistently do as leader.
What you'll develop
By the end of this Immerse, you will be able to:
- Define a role and the evidence you will look for before interviewing, and ask questions that test for potential, culture add and evidence.
- Distinguish a working group, a pseudo team and a real team using Katzenbach and Smith's team performance curve.
- Explain Hackman's three essentials and three enablers, and why design matters more than coaching.
- Describe Belbin's nine team roles and explain why they suit conversation rather than selection.
- Explain the hidden profile problem and why groups tend to lose information that only one member holds.
- Explain what psychological safety is and is not, and how it combines with high standards to create a learning zone.
- Identify how local decisions on working time, deductions and unpaid tasks can bring a worker's average pay below the legal minimum.
- Explain Edmondson's teaming and its four behaviours, and the three pillars of the team of teams model.
