Who It's For
Leaders and HR professionals making the case for emotional intelligence
Overview
Claims about emotional intelligence are everywhere, and many do not survive a closer look. This programme puts the evidence under honest scrutiny. It traces the popular ninety per cent figure to unpublished marketing material and sets it against the O'Boyle meta-analysis, then re-examines the classic business cases from L'Oreal, American Express and the US Air Force. It turns to stronger ground in the randomised controlled trial of Marc Brackett's RULER approach, and closes by comparing the MSCEIT, EQ-i 2.0 and ESCI, showing how to choose an instrument and why a test names the gap while practice closes it.
Aims
This programme aims to develop leaders who can make the case for emotional intelligence in public service without overclaiming. It builds the judgement to test a striking statistic, separate commercial claims from peer-reviewed findings, choose assessment tools for the right purpose and turn results into small, repeated changes in practice.
In summary, you will be able to:
- Assess claims about emotional intelligence by asking who produced them, where they were published and what the peer-reviewed evidence actually shows.
- Choose an appropriate instrument from the MSCEIT, EQ-i 2.0 and ESCI for research, coaching or leadership development, and recognise how measurement can mislead.
- Plan a credible case and a repeated practice loop that turn emotional intelligence evidence, including the RULER skills, into change in your own leadership.
What you'll develop
Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:
- Distinguish a commercial claim from a peer-reviewed finding, using the ninety per cent figure as the example.
- Explain what the O'Boyle meta-analysis found, including what a correlation of 0.28 and an extra one to seven per cent of explained variance do and do not mean.
- Distinguish what each of the three classic business cases actually tested: selection, training or prediction.
- Assess a celebrated figure using three questions about who produced it, where it was published and whether you can reach the primary source.
- Describe the five RULER skills and explain why their sequence matters, especially why regulating comes last.
- Distinguish the MSCEIT, EQ-i 2.0 and ESCI by the tradition each belongs to and the question each was built to answer.
