Who It's For
Leaders wanting an honest grasp of emotional intelligence
Overview
Emotional intelligence is widely invoked in leadership, yet few people realise how contested its foundations are. This programme sets out the ideas carefully. It traces the three origins of the field in Salovey and Mayer's ability model, Bar-On's trait model and Goleman's competency model, then works through the four-branch model of perceiving, using, understanding and managing emotion. It sets Ekman's classical theory against Barrett's constructed emotion, introducing the refractory period and emotional granularity, and ends with self-awareness and self-management through Boyatzis's Intentional Change Theory and Susan David's emotional agility, with emotion treated throughout as information.
Aims
This programme aims to give public service leaders a clear, honest grasp of what emotional intelligence is and is not, so they can read their own emotional states more precisely and manage them without suppression. The shift it seeks is from emotional intelligence as a popular slogan to a practical, evidence-aware discipline of self-awareness.
In summary, you will be able to:
- Distinguish the ability, trait and competency models of emotional intelligence and explain the principle that emotion is information.
- Apply the four-branch model, the refractory period and emotional granularity to prepare for and hold a difficult conversation with greater care.
- Plan your own development using Intentional Change Theory and emotional agility, distinguishing genuine self-management from suppression of difficult feelings.
What you'll develop
Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:
- Describe the three origins of emotional intelligence and distinguish the ability, trait and competency models by the question each one answers and how each is measured.
- Explain the principle that emotion is information and identify what emotional intelligence is not, including niceness, suppression and a fixed gift.
- Describe the four branches of Salovey and Mayer's ability model and explain why they form a hierarchy with perception at its base.
- Apply the four branches to plan and hold a difficult conversation, from reading your own state beforehand to deciding what to carry forward afterwards.
- Compare Ekman's classical theory of emotion with Barrett's theory of constructed emotion and identify where they genuinely disagree and where they agree.
- Describe the four internal competencies in Boyatzis and Goleman's model and Susan David's four skills of emotional agility.
