Who It's For

Leaders moving from consulting people to designing with them

Overview

Sharing power asks more of organisations than asking for people's views. This programme moves from co-design, with Kelly Ann McKercher's principles, the Double Diamond and experience-based co-design, into co-production, from Elinor Ostrom and Edgar Cahn to the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014 and the Co-production Network for Wales. It explores lived experience leadership and the emotional labour of sharing stories, how to evaluate engagement with Rowe and Frewer's criteria and Scotland's National Standards, and what it takes to lead a listening organisation. A capstone tests the ideas against Blaenau Gwent, Lambeth and Barking and Dagenham.

Aims

This programme aims to develop leaders who design with people rather than for them, building the practical judgement to set up genuine co-design and co-production, support lived experience leaders fairly, evaluate influence honestly and create an organisational culture in which power is shared as a matter of course rather than as an exception.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Distinguish co-design, experience-based co-design and co-production, and explain how the Welsh legal duties and Co-production Network principles shape practice.
  2. Design a co-design or co-production process with the conditions, roles, payment and evaluation measures needed to give participants real influence over decisions.
  3. Assess your organisation's engagement culture and governance, using the capstone cases to plan one real decision where power is genuinely shared.

What you'll develop

Across this Explore, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Distinguish consultation, design thinking, co-design and co-production, and apply McKercher's four principles and the Double Diamond to a co-design process.
  2. Describe the stages of experience-based co-design, from setting up and gathering staff and patient experience to separate events, a joint event and co-design groups.
  3. Describe the five principles of the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014, the section 16 duty and the involvement way of working, and explain why a legal duty is a floor rather than a ceiling.
  4. Explain Sandhu's lived, learnt and practice expertise and place your organisation's lived experience roles on the spectrum from feedback to leadership.
  5. Distinguish the team model of engagement from the culture model and describe the four leadership behaviours that make engagement real.
  6. Use the five questions of context, power, method, change and transfer to read any engagement case.
