Who It's For
New and established managers in public service
Overview
Firm foundations brings together the ideas that every manager in public service draws on, whether they know it or not. It treats a century of management thinking as a practical diagnostic kit, from Taylor, Fayol and Mintzberg to McGregor's Theory X and Theory Y, Wiseman's Multipliers and Google's Project Oxygen. It then turns objectives into direction a team can run on, using the SMART test, objectives and key results, the urgent and important matrix, Pareto and situational delegation. It closes with motivation, through Maslow, Herzberg, Vroom and Pink, and what a manager can still offer when pay and certainty are off the table.
Aims
This programme aims to give new and established managers a sound, evidence-informed base for everyday management: choosing the right lens for the problem in front of them, setting clear priorities, delegating with confidence and sustaining motivation in teams under pressure.
In summary, you will be able to:
- Explain how key management theories, from Taylor and Fayol to McGregor and Project Oxygen, help diagnose the problem in front of you.
- Apply SMART objectives, prioritisation tools and situational delegation to give your team clear direction, including during a reorganisation.
- Use motivation theory, from Herzberg to Pink's autonomy, mastery and purpose, to strengthen engagement when pay and promotion cannot be offered.
What you'll develop
Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:
- Explain the main schools of management thought, from Taylor and Fayol to human relations and Wiseman's Multipliers, and what each adds to a manager's diagnostic kit.
- Distinguish management from leadership using Zaleznik and Kotter, and describe what managers actually do using Mintzberg's ten roles and his shadowing study.
- Apply the five SMART tests to turn a vague goal into an objective a team can act on and review.
- Use the urgent and important matrix and the eighty twenty principle to decide where your own and your team's time should go.
- Explain how Maslow, Herzberg and Vroom each identify a different mechanism behind motivation, and use them to diagnose a specific motivation problem.
- Distinguish tasks where extrinsic rewards help from tasks where they harm performance, using the candle problem and Pink's Type I and Type X behaviour.
