When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

Who It's For

Managers who want to combine management tools with judgement

Overview

The manager's craft is a full day across the whole of management practice, treating management as a craft that improves with reflection. It starts with a century of management thought as a diagnostic kit, then builds the core disciplines: directing performance through objectives, priorities and delegation; motivating people with insights from Herzberg, Vroom and Pink; and leading change and transition with Lewin, Bridges and Kotter. It moves into team dynamics with Tuckman and Lencioni, and the critical conversations of feedback, coaching and conflict. A closing capstone on operating systems, Toyota, Zappos and a council reorganisation shows how to combine the tools.

Aims

This programme aims to develop managers who choose and combine tools with judgement rather than reaching for a single favourite, so they can give clear direction, motivate and develop people, lead teams through change and handle difficult conversations with confidence and care.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Explain how the main strands of management thinking help diagnose performance, motivation and team problems in a public service setting.
  2. Apply objectives, delegation, motivation and change models to give your team clear direction and support people through transition.
  3. Lead feedback, coaching and conflict conversations, and combine management tools deliberately to improve how your team works together.

What you'll develop

By the end of this Immerse, you will be able to:

  1. Explain the main schools of management thought, from Taylor and Fayol to human relations and Wiseman's Multipliers, and what each adds to a manager's diagnostic kit.
  2. Apply the five SMART tests to turn a vague goal into an objective a team can act on and review.
  3. Explain how Maslow, Herzberg and Vroom each identify a different mechanism behind motivation, and use them to diagnose a specific motivation problem.
  4. Distinguish a group from a team using Katzenbach and Smith's conditions, and judge whether the work in front of you actually needs a team.
  5. Give specific, caring and direct feedback using Situation, Behaviour, Impact and Radical Candor, and explain why the feedback sandwich undermines both criticism and praise.
  6. Describe the difference between an operating system built for predictability and one built for adaptability, and identify which inherited rules in your own organisation are worth challenging.
