Who It's For

Managers leading teams through reorganisation, friction and difficult conversations

Overview

Managing people through change focuses on the moments when management becomes most human: reorganisation, team friction and the conversations people avoid. It distinguishes change from transition, using Lewin, Kubler-Ross and Bridges, and explores how Kotter's eight steps and the Heath brothers' Switch help change stick. It then asks what turns a group into a team, drawing on Katzenbach and Smith, Tuckman and Lencioni, before replacing the feedback sandwich with Situation, Behaviour, Impact, Radical Candor, coaching questions and the Thomas-Kilmann conflict modes. A capstone applies the whole toolkit to Toyota, Zappos and a council reorganisation.

Aims

This programme aims to help managers lead people through change with more skill and humanity: reading where individuals and teams are in transition, diagnosing what is really holding a team back, and having the honest feedback, coaching and conflict conversations that keep performance and trust intact.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Distinguish change from transition and apply Bridges, Kotter or Switch to support people through a reorganisation in your service.
  2. Diagnose your team's stage, dynamics and dysfunctions using Tuckman, Katzenbach and Smith, and Lencioni, and plan how to address them.
  3. Lead a difficult feedback, coaching or conflict conversation using Situation, Behaviour, Impact, Radical Candor and the Thomas-Kilmann modes.

What you'll develop

Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:

  1. Explain the difference between change and transition, and describe how Lewin, the change curve and Bridges each account for what people go through.
  2. Apply Kotter's eight steps and the four Switch moves to plan a change and to shift behaviour that has not moved despite a sound plan.
  3. Distinguish a group from a team using Katzenbach and Smith's conditions, and judge whether the work in front of you actually needs a team.
  4. Identify where a team sits in Tuckman's stages and where it is failing in Lencioni's five dysfunctions, so that you start the fix at the right level.
  5. Give specific, caring and direct feedback using Situation, Behaviour, Impact and Radical Candor, and explain why the feedback sandwich undermines both criticism and praise.
  6. Describe the difference between an operating system built for predictability and one built for adaptability, and identify which inherited rules in your own organisation are worth challenging.
