Who It's For
Senior leaders designing wellbeing and resilience into their organisations
Overview
Resilience that lasts is designed, not summoned. This programme looks beyond personal coping to the body, the mind, the organisation and the wider environment. It draws on sleep science, allostatic load and polyvagal theory, Kristin Neff's self-compassion, and Self-Determination Theory with PERMA, then examines high-reliability organisations, ISO 22316 and Taleb's antifragility. It addresses technostress, financial strain and life-stage differences such as menopause and neurodiversity, reads the environment through BANI, and tests the ideas in two capstones, from the Wigan Deal and Buurtzorg to the four-day week pilot and Costco.
Aims
This programme aims to help leaders build resilience that endures, by attending to physiology, motivation and self-compassion, designing organisations that grow from failure and gain from disruption, and responding to modern pressures and life-stage differences with structural answers rather than asking individuals simply to cope harder.
In summary, you will be able to:
- Explain how physiology, self-compassion and basic psychological needs sustain or erode resilience, and why modern pressures call for structural rather than individual responses.
- Assess your organisation's resilience using high-reliability principles, ISO 22316, antifragility and the BANI framework, and identify where fragility is hiding.
- Design practical responses to digital, financial and life-stage pressures, drawing on the case studies to build resilience into how work is organised.
What you'll develop
Across this Explore, you will develop the ability to:
- Explain how established resilience and adaptability frameworks account for the decisions taken by Wigan Council, LEGO and Buurtzorg.
- Describe Neff's three components of self-compassion and distinguish self-compassion from self-pity, excuse making and lowered standards.
- Describe Weick and Sutcliffe's five high-reliability principles and the everyday habits each one works against.
- Distinguish fragile, robust, resilient and antifragile responses to shock and identify where fragility hides in your organisation.
- Explain how menopause and neurodiversity can change demands and resources, using the six areas of resilience as the map.
- Explain how established models account for the results of the UK four-day week pilot, carrier flight deck operations and Costco's response to the 2008 crisis.
