About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Who It's For

Managers and leaders sustaining their own and their team's wellbeing

Overview

Resilience starts with the individual but is sustained by the conditions around them. This programme moves from the inside out: separating wellbeing, resilience and adaptability, naming work stressors through the HSE Management Standards and the Job Demands-Resources model, and exploring Coutu's building blocks, Bridges' transitions, Seligman's three P's and mindfulness practice. It then turns outward to leading others through adversity, with psychological safety, the holding environment and recovery, and to adaptability as a learnable skill. It closes with a personal resilience plan and a team resilience charter built from an honest assessment of six areas.

Aims

The aim is to develop leaders who can sustain their own resilience and build it in their teams, with the clarity to diagnose stress and burnout, practical habits for difficult days, the skill to create psychological safety and recovery, and a written plan that turns understanding into everyday practice.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Distinguish wellbeing, resilience and adaptability, and diagnose sources of stress and burnout using the HSE Management Standards and the Job Demands-Resources model.
  2. Apply personal resilience models and mindfulness techniques, and create psychological safety and recovery for a team facing adversity or sustained change.
  3. Build a personal resilience plan and a team resilience charter that address real gaps without shifting structural problems onto individual stamina.

What you'll develop

Across this Explore, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Distinguish wellbeing as a state, resilience as a capacity and adaptability as a skill, and explain why each needs a different intervention.
  2. Explain why resilience depends on context and distinguish its individual, team and organisational levels.
  3. Explain Kabat-Zinn's definition of mindfulness and distinguish it from relaxation, emptying the mind and escapism.
  4. Explain Edmondson's definition of psychological safety and describe how a leader's response to the first piece of bad news builds or destroys it.
  5. Explain why individual resilience work is incomplete on its own and distinguish Magness's real toughness from the appearance of strength.
  6. Assess your own resilience across the six areas and identify your largest gap, testing your score with someone who will be honest with you.
