When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Overview

A risk you cannot name is a risk you cannot manage. This practical module works through the ISO 31000 process of identify, assess, treat and monitor, using Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, the Structured What If Technique and the risk assessment matrix, then sets out the four standard responses. The Airbus A380 case shows that good mitigation does not prevent every failure; it survives one. Many boards approve a risk appetite statement that nobody can quote a month later. This module defines appetite, tolerance and capacity precisely, shows what makes a statement specific enough to change a decision, and explains why appetite must vary by category. Drawing on the Wells Fargo case, it sets out how boards monitor appetite between reviews and spot the warning signs of drift early.

What you'll develop

In this Bitesize, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Use Failure Mode and Effects Analysis and the Structured What If Technique to identify risks precisely, asking how a process could fail rather than whether it will.
  2. Assess risks on a likelihood and impact matrix and use it as a conversation starter rather than a verdict.
  3. Choose between treat, transfer, tolerate and terminate as a deliberate, documented response to an assessed risk.
  4. Distinguish risk appetite, risk tolerance and risk capacity and explain why a board needs all three.
  5. Assess whether a risk appetite statement is quantified, qualitative where needed, linked to strategy and set by category.
