When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Overview

Risk is the price of having objectives, not a problem to be solved. This module builds a shared vocabulary using the ISO 31000 definition of risk, maps six families of risk, and explains Frank Knight's distinction between measurable risk and genuine uncertainty. It draws on the World Economic Forum's Global Risks Report 2026 and the Blockbuster case to show why strategic risk needs its own discipline.

What you'll develop

In this Bitesize, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Define risk, uncertainty, risk appetite and risk register precisely, and explain why risk is the effect of uncertainty on objectives.
  2. Distinguish the six families of risk and explain why strategic risk needs a different discipline from operational risk.
  3. Apply Knight's distinction between risk and uncertainty to choose between quantitative tools and scenario thinking.
