When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Who It's For

Managers and leaders who want to lead through coaching

Overview

Leading by asking rather than telling is one of the most effective habits a manager can develop, and one of the hardest to sustain. Leading by asking grounds coaching in its foundations: Passmore's continuum of helping, Bordin's working alliance and de Haan's evidence on the coaching relationship. It traces models from Gallwey's inner game to Whitmore's GROW and Bungay Stanier's coaching habit, connects coaching to Kolb, Knowles and how adults develop, and explores person-centred, solution-focused and cognitive behavioural approaches. A practical toolkit, buddy and peer coaching, emotional intelligence and feedback conversations follow, and the day closes with team coaching, reflexivity and building a coaching culture.

Aims

The aim is to help managers and leaders lead through coaching: building the relationships, questions and listening that help people think for themselves and grow. It develops both the individual skill of coaching conversations and the wider capability to coach teams and to grow a coaching culture across the organisation.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Distinguish coaching from mentoring, training and counselling, and explain how the coaching relationship and adult development theory shape good practice.
  2. Use coaching models, powerful questions and person-centred, solution-focused or cognitive behavioural approaches in everyday conversations with colleagues.
  3. Plan how to extend coaching beyond one-to-one conversations through team coaching, peer coaching and a stronger coaching culture.

What you'll develop

By the end of this Immerse, you will be able to:

  1. Distinguish training, coaching, mentoring and counselling, and identify which conversation you are in.
  2. Explain Gallwey's formula of performance as potential minus interference, and his Self 1 and Self 2.
  3. Describe Rogers's three core conditions of empathy, congruence and unconditional positive regard, and how they shape coaching presence.
  4. Plan a coaching session by clarifying whether it is about development or performance and choosing a suitable setting.
  5. Assess where your organisation sits on Clutterbuck and Megginson's four stages of a coaching culture.
  6. Compare Ekman's classical theory of emotion with Barrett's theory of constructed emotion and identify where they genuinely disagree and where they agree.
  7. Give specific, caring and direct feedback using Situation, Behaviour, Impact and Radical Candor, and explain why the feedback sandwich undermines both criticism and praise.
  8. Describe Edmondson's team learning behaviours and West's team reflexivity cycle.
