When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Overview

Purpose is the first design decision a team leader makes. This module covers Hackman's compelling direction, the GRPI model of goals, roles, processes and interpersonal relationships, and meta-analysis evidence on team goals from Kleingeld and colleagues. It shows how to write a team charter and a team communication charter, and uses Gene Kranz and Apollo 13 to show why purpose holds when plans fail. Who is in a team, how many there are and how they differ shape performance long before anyone meets. This module looks honestly at Belbin's nine team roles, the evidence on size and social loafing from Ringelmann to Karau and Williams, Amazon's two-pizza teams, Scott Page's diversity theorem and its critique, and Lau and Murnighan's faultlines, ending with a practitioner lens for composing a team.

What you'll develop

In this Bitesize, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Explain Hackman's compelling direction and why it should specify ends rather than means.
  2. Use the GRPI model to diagnose team friction from the top down, and explain what the research says about group and individual goals.
  3. Plan a team charter and a team communication charter with your team, including when to review them.
  4. Describe Belbin's nine team roles and explain why they suit conversation rather than selection.
  5. Explain how team size affects coordination and effort, and identify the conditions that reduce social loafing.
