When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Overview

Distance does not break teams; neglect does. This module shows what leaders must design back in when a team is not in one place, drawing on Jarvenpaa and Leidner's swift trust, O'Leary and Cummings's spatial, temporal and configurational distance, and Hinds and Bailey on distributed conflict. It covers choosing the right channel, writing things down, GitLab's handbook, and a weekly, monthly and quarterly hybrid rhythm. Much public service work is done by people who were not a team yesterday. This module explores Amy Edmondson's teaming, the team of teams model, Ancona and Caldwell's boundary spanning roles and x-teams, and the pressures of identity, status and accountability in multi-agency teams. The Chilean mine rescue, read through envision, enrol and engage, leads into five moves for leading across organisational boundaries.

What you'll develop

In this Bitesize, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Explain swift trust and how reliable behaviour sustains trust at a distance.
  2. Identify the spatial, temporal and configurational distance your team faces and choose the right channel for each conversation.
  3. Plan a hybrid team rhythm and in-person time designed around what only presence can do.
  4. Explain Edmondson's teaming and its four behaviours, and the three pillars of the team of teams model.
  5. Identify ambassador, task coordination and scouting activity in your team and share it deliberately.
