Who It's For
Managers and leaders building a rounded coaching practice
Overview
Coaching foundations is a broad dive into the ideas and skills that sit beneath good coaching in public service. It begins by separating coaching from training, mentoring and counselling, and by examining the working alliance, contracting and presence that make the relationship work. From there it moves through GROW and its successors, the adult learning theory of Kolb, Knowles and Argyris, and the person-centred, solution-focused and cognitive behavioural traditions. It closes by widening the lens: the practical toolkit of questions and structure, the Tavistock tradition of Bion and Menzies Lyth, and team and systemic coaching after Hawkins, Hackman and Wageman.
Aims
This programme aims to build a rounded coaching practice for managers and leaders, combining the relationship skills, models and psychology that make one-to-one conversations effective with an awareness of the group and system each person returns to, so that coaching becomes a reliable part of how they lead.
In summary, you will be able to:
- Explain how coaching differs from other helping conversations and how adult learning, person-centred and cognitive behavioural psychology underpin its effectiveness.
- Apply GROW, solution-focused and cognitive behavioural tools within a well-contracted coaching conversation that ends with a clear, owned commitment.
- Recognise group dynamics, anxiety and system pressures in a coaching situation and choose whether individual, team or systemic coaching offers most leverage.
What you'll develop
Across this Explore, you will develop the ability to:
- Distinguish training, coaching, mentoring and counselling, and identify which conversation you are in.
- Explain Gallwey's formula of performance as potential minus interference, and his Self 1 and Self 2.
- Explain how a coaching conversation takes a coachee once around Kolb's experiential learning cycle.
- Apply Ellis's ABCDE model to bring an unhelpful belief into view and dispute it collaboratively.
- Plan a coaching session by clarifying whether it is about development or performance and choosing a suitable setting.
- Distinguish individual, team, group and systemic coaching and choose where the most useful leverage lies.
