When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

Overview

A housing association sets its own direction, but regulation checks that it delivers. This module sets out the building blocks of a strategic framework: a deliberately social mission, values that shape behaviour, a multi year business plan and the consumer and economic standards of the Regulator of Social Housing. It compares the council golden thread, shows where frameworks come unstuck and explains why the framework is not paperwork. Housing associations are neither charity nor developer, but a deliberately blended financial model. This module explains the four ingredients on one balance sheet: grant funding through the Affordable Homes Programme in England or Social Housing Grant in Wales, private borrowing against rent and assets, cross subsidy from market sale and shared ownership, and rent held within the Rent Standard. It then combines them on a single development.

What you'll develop

In this Bitesize, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Describe the four building blocks of a housing association's strategic framework and how they fit together across the planning cycle.
  2. Distinguish what the consumer standards and the economic standards cover, and explain why the framework is internally set but externally checked.
  3. Apply four simple tests to identify where a strategic framework is real and where it has come unstuck.
  4. Describe the four ingredients of housing association finance and explain how they combine on a single development.
  5. Compare the grant routes in England and Wales and distinguish housing association finance from that of a council or private landlord.
