Overview and Outcomes.
Who It's For
Managers and leaders forming or building new teams
Overview
This half-day programme covers the foundations of team development and the dynamics that decide whether a new team will thrive. It explores what makes a real team, how teams develop beyond Tuckman, and the evidence on team effectiveness from Hackman to the Big Five of teamwork. It sets out purpose, goals and team charters, and roles, composition and size. It then turns to Edmondson's psychological safety, sharing information and collective intelligence, deciding together without groupthink, and handling conflict well, drawing on cases from Apollo 13 to the Cuban Missile Crisis and the East Kent maternity investigation.
Aims
The aim is to help leaders form teams that work: designing the right conditions from the start, setting shared purpose and roles, and building the trust, voice and decision habits that allow a team to use the knowledge and challenge within it.
In summary, you will be able to:
- Assess whether a group is a real team and what conditions it needs, drawing on Hackman, Katzenbach and Smith and the effectiveness evidence.
- Design a team's purpose, charter, roles and composition to give it a clear direction and a strong start.
- Apply practices for psychological safety, information sharing, structured dissent and conflict resolution to improve how your team decides.
What you'll develop
Across this Explore, you will develop the ability to:
- Distinguish a working group, a pseudo team and a real team using Katzenbach and Smith's team performance curve.
- Explain Hackman's three essentials and three enablers, and why design matters more than coaching.
- Explain Hackman's compelling direction and why it should specify ends rather than means.
- Explain Edmondson's definition of psychological safety and use the standards and safety matrix to place your team.
- Explain the hidden profile problem and why groups tend to lose information that only one member holds.
- Distinguish task, relationship and process conflict and explain what the meta-analyses say about each.
