Overview and Outcomes.
Who It's For
Leaders of established teams looking to keep improving
Overview
This half-day programme looks at how established teams grow, and what holds them back. It begins with hidden dynamics drawn from Bion and Menzies Lyth and the leader's role as designer, coach and member. It explores team coaching through Hawkins's five disciplines, team learning and the After Action Review, virtual and hybrid working, and teaming across organisational boundaries. It then examines top teams in public services, including statutory officers and Northamptonshire County Council, and closes with the 1996 Everest disaster, Wales at Euro 2016 and the Manchester Arena response.
Aims
This programme aims to develop leaders who help mature teams keep growing: surfacing hidden dynamics, choosing the right leadership role, coaching and reviewing as a team, and leading well across distance, organisational boundaries and the top of the organisation, where the stakes are highest.
In summary, you will be able to:
- Diagnose hidden dynamics such as social defences and diffusion of responsibility, and choose whether to lead as designer, coach or member.
- Design team coaching, reflexivity and debrief practices that help a team improve through its own experience.
- Lead hybrid, multi-agency and senior leadership teams, applying evidence on distance, boundary spanning and the ways top teams go wrong.
What you'll develop
Across this Explore, you will develop the ability to:
- Identify Bion's basic assumptions of dependency, fight-flight and pairing when they appear in a group.
- Use the functional team leadership model to identify which leadership functions your team is missing.
- Describe Edmondson's team learning behaviours and West's team reflexivity cycle.
- Explain swift trust and how reliable behaviour sustains trust at a distance.
- Distinguish a single-leader unit from real team mode and choose deliberately which an agenda item needs.
- Apply team lenses such as voice, purpose and teaming to a real case, reading it forwards rather than with hindsight.
