When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Who It's For

Managers and leaders who design, lead or coach teams

Overview

This full-day programme covers team development in depth, from what makes a real team to leading teams at the top of public services. It moves from foundations, development and effectiveness, drawing on Hackman, Tuckman, Gersick and the Big Five of teamwork, through purpose, composition and psychological safety, to communication, decisions, conflict and hidden dynamics. It then explores team coaching, team learning, hybrid and multi-agency teaming and top teams, before a capstone reads Everest, Wales at Euro 2016 and the Manchester Arena response through five layers of team development.

Aims

The aim is to develop leaders who can design, build and sustain teams that genuinely work: creating the right conditions, nurturing trust and voice, handling conflict and hidden dynamics, and helping teams improve through coaching and reflection wherever and however they are organised.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Assess a team against the evidence on real teams, development and effectiveness, and design its purpose, charter and composition accordingly.
  2. Apply practices that build psychological safety, share information, improve decisions and keep conflict productive within your team.
  3. Lead teams through coaching, learning reviews and work across distance, boundaries and senior leadership, recognising the dynamics that hold them back.

What you'll develop

By the end of this Immerse, you will be able to:

  1. Distinguish a working group, a pseudo team and a real team using Katzenbach and Smith's team performance curve.
  2. Explain Hackman's compelling direction and why it should specify ends rather than means.
  3. Explain the hidden profile problem and why groups tend to lose information that only one member holds.
  4. Use the functional team leadership model to identify which leadership functions your team is missing.
  5. Explain swift trust and how reliable behaviour sustains trust at a distance.
  6. Apply team lenses such as voice, purpose and teaming to a real case, reading it forwards rather than with hindsight.
