Overview and Outcomes.
Who It's For
Team leaders wanting people to speak up and be heard
Overview
Teams learn and decide well only when people can speak and be heard. This programme starts with Amy Edmondson's psychological safety and the difference between competence and character trust, then explores hidden profiles, collective intelligence and tools from safety-critical teams such as SBAR. It examines groupthink, the Abilene paradox and the premortem, and the forms of conflict that help or harm teams, with the East Kent maternity investigation as a case. It then looks beneath the surface with Bion and Menzies Lyth, and closes on the leader as designer, coach and member.
Aims
The aim is to develop leaders who build teams where people speak up, information is shared, dissent improves decisions and conflict stays productive, and who can recognise and address the hidden dynamics that quietly drain a team's effort and judgement.
In summary, you will be able to:
- Explain how psychological safety, trust and information sharing shape team learning and decisions, and identify where they are breaking down.
- Apply practical tools such as structured dissent, the premortem, closed-loop communication and a five-step conversation to improve team decisions and handle conflict.
- Diagnose hidden team dynamics, such as basic assumption behaviour and social defences, and choose the leadership role your team needs.
What you'll develop
Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:
- Explain Edmondson's definition of psychological safety and use the standards and safety matrix to place your team.
- Explain the hidden profile problem and why groups tend to lose information that only one member holds.
- Identify Janis's symptoms of groupthink and explain why intelligence offers no protection against it.
- Distinguish task, relationship and process conflict and explain what the meta-analyses say about each.
- Identify Bion's basic assumptions of dependency, fight-flight and pairing when they appear in a group.
- Use the functional team leadership model to identify which leadership functions your team is missing.
